Today, I would like to talk about something a little more serious than my norm, please bear with me, you may get something out of this. We’ll get back to the jocularity later (been watching M.A.S.H. can you tell?)
Lately, my wife and I have been giving a lot of serious thought to getting our will and affairs in order, in the event something were to happen to us. We need to know that our son will be well cared for, and as it stands there is nothing in place to ensure that. Why should we worry about being so prepared you ask? There is a common misapprehension that I encounter fairly often when teaching self defense, “those things only happen to other people.” And it is true, every time we hear about bad things, it was somebody else we hear about. But statistics show that there are a whole lot of somebody else’s out there. And the law of averages states that, eventually, it could be you. I think everybody should always enjoy the best but be prepared for the worst, there is no way of knowing when it could hit. I have a saying that I like to live by, “I’d rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.” This holds true for being prepared, I would rather be prepared and not need to be, than need to be prepared and not be.
I’m not suggesting that you live in fear, please, enjoy life. Take time to enjoy the finer things life has to offer, the love of a child, the warm sun on your face, a nice summer rain in the heat of the day, and so many other things that it would take forever to list. But by all means be prepared in the off chance that something should happen.
Remember, YOU are MY somebody else.
